Behaviour Statement
Behaviour Principles Written Statement
The Governors of Brookland Infant & Nursery and Brookland Junior Schools believe that high standards of behaviour are at the heart of a successful school and enable children to make the best possible progress in all areas of their learning.
The school’s primary concern is the safety, wellbeing and education of all children.
Children are held to high standards of attendance and punctuality.
All children, staff, governors and visitors have the right to feel safe, valued and respected, and to be free from disruption or bullying, including online. We are an inclusive school, and all children, staff and visitors are free from any form of discrimination. The school aims to create and maintain an atmosphere and ethos of equality and acceptance. The school will promote Brookland Values and positive behaviour. Our policies reflect the duties of the Equality Act 2010.
The Behaviour Management Policy and associated school rules are shared with, and understood by children, parents and carers, governors and staff. There are high expectations for children's behaviour.
Children are given opportunities and are encouraged to support each other in the process of positive reinforcement and personal growth, learning and recognising good behaviour. Children are helped to take responsibility for their actions and to reflect on their choices.
Staff, governors, volunteers, and parents and carers, model good behaviour and set an excellent example to the children.
Families are involved in behaviour incidents to foster good relationships between the school and children's home life.
School rules are consistently applied across the school. Good behaviour is acknowledged and rewarded fairly. When sanctions are deemed necessary, they are in line with the Behaviour Management Policy, and should be applied fairly, consistently, proportionally, and reasonably, considering SEND, disability and the needs of vulnerable children, offering support as necessary.
The decision to use positive handling interventions will be based on individual circumstances and the professional judgement of trained staff.
The Suspensions and Exclusions Policy explains that these measures will only be used as a last resort, and outlines the processes involved in suspensions and exclusions.
The governors expect the Headteacher to include guidance and clarification for staff on their powers to search for banned items, and to discipline children for misbehaviour outside school witnessed by a member of staff or reported to school when they are taking part in school organised or related activity, travelling to or from school, wearing school uniform, or are in some other way identifiable as a child of Brookland Infant and Nursery School.
The governing body also emphasises that violence or threatening behaviour will not be tolerated in any circumstances.
This is a statement of principles, not practice.
Practical applications of these principles are the responsibility of the Headteacher. For further information please see the Behaviour Management Policy.
This written statement of behaviour principles is reviewed and approved by the Safeguarding committee annually.
